Ear Correction (Otoplasty)
Prominent or protruding ears can sometimes be hidden with longer hair, but the only permanent remedy for this undesirable feature is otoplasty. The procedure permanently corrects protruding ears, allowing them to lay flatter against the head. As a result, both the ears and the head appear less prominent.

Procedure
Through a vertical incision behind the ear, a sliver of cartilage is carefully removed and the remaining cartilage is gently molded to create a desired contour. The incision is inconspicuous once it has healed.
Post-Operative Care
After the procedure, patients may experience mild swelling and slight discomfort, which can be easily controlled with over-the-counter pain relievers. The ears may be very sensitive to cold temperatures for several months; however, wearing a heat,
scarf of earmuffs when outdoors will help relieve the chill.
When to Have the Procedure
Unlike most cosmetic procedures, an otoplasty is performed to correct a flaw that is unrelated to the aging process. Otoplasty may be especially beneficial for children with protruding ears, since they may suffer psychological problems as a result
of teasing and insensitive remarks made by other children. The procedure usually can be performed after the age of six or seven, or after the ears have reached 90 percent of their adult size.
